Huntsman Cancer Institute

Founded by Brother Jon M. Huntsman Sr., the Huntsman Cancer Institute is dedicated to finding the causes of cancer, developing new and better treatments, and preventing people from ever developing cancer. Huntsman founded HCI to focus on understanding cancer from its very beginnings and to translate this knowledge into safer and more effective treatments. HCI was chosen as Sigma Chi's preferred philanthropic partner because many Sigs and their families have been directly affected by cancer, the second-leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, men have an approximate lifetime risk of 1:2 for developing the disease; for women, the risk is 1:3.

Derby Days

Derby Days is our annual philanthropy event set out to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. It consists of various fundraisers throughout the week, including things like trivia night, pie throwing, and more. Throughout the week, we also had Sign a Sig where the sorority with the most signatures on our white shirts won a monetary donation towards their house charity. This year, we ended up raising over $3,000 thanks to so many generous donors.

Shave for the Cure

Shave for the cure is one of our chapter's most unique and successful fundraising event. It occurs each year during our homecoming football game tailgate where brothers voluntarily auction off the right to have their head shaved. During the 2021-2022 academic year, our chapter raised $17,000 for Huntsman Cancer Institute from this event.
